Secretary of Defense and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Brief Pentagon Press Corps - Secretary Robert Gates and Admiral Mike Mullen briefed the Pentagon press corps this afternoon. Secretary Gates opened with a statement on a 45-day review he has ordered of the events that recently took place at Ft. Hood, TX. The review will be headed by former Secretary of Veterans Affairs, Togo D. West, Jr. and Adm. Vernon E. Clark, USN (Ret.). The Secretary also noted that a more in-depth review will follow, after the initial 45-day review is completed. PENTAGON VACCINATING US FORCES AGAINST H1N1 - The Pentagon says half the number of H1N1 vaccines required for all US military personnel deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan have arrived in the region. Shots have arrived in South Korea for all US military personnel stationed there. The department is also strongly disputing any suggestion that detainees held at Guantanamo Bay could receive shots before deployed personnel. two cuts on this feed.

GENERAL ODIERNO BRIEFS PENTAGON PRESS ON IRAQ WAR - The top US military commander in Iraq, General Raymond Odierno Thursday outlined significant progress in Iraq but also told Pentagon reporters the United States is likely going to have to provide assistance to the country for years to come. Even so, he says he expects the US to reduce its force levels from the current troop strength of 122-thousand to roughly 50 thousand by the middle of next year.

SPOKESMAN MORRELL DETAILS US RELIEF EFFORTS TO SAMOA, AFGHAN MEETING - The United States is assisting efforts to help victims of the earthquake and tsunami in American Samoa. Defense Department Spokesman Geoff Morrell says US military assets are being used to ferry expected aid requests to the region. At a Pentagon news conference Wednesday, he also spoke about a White House meeting to reassess US war strategy in Afghanistan.

Pentagon Press Corps Briefing- Questions Focus on Afghanistan - At Noon today, Pentagon Press Secretary Geoff Morrell took questions from the press corps. Most questions focused on operations in Afghanistan and the recent report from Gen. Stanley McCrystal. The link above contains three audio clips from today's briefing. The first is Mr. Morrell's comments stressing that no decision has been made on sending further troops to Afghanistan. This clip is 16 seconds.
