IMMEDIATE RELEASE No. 935-04
September 22, 2004

Transfer of Detainees Completed

The Department of Defense announced today that it transferred 10 detainees from Afghanistan to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

The decision to transfer a detainee to Guantanamo is based on their further intelligence value to the United States and whether they continue to pose a threat to the United States.

These detainees will be subject to the same review processes for continued detention as all other detainees currently at Guantanamo.

As a result of this latest transfer, there are now approximately 549 detainees at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Because of operational and security considerations, no further details can be provided.
